This house has some carpeting in it, though thankfully it’s not in the living room and kitchen areas. It is, however, on the stairs and in the bedrooms. I don’t even own a vacuum cleaner right now which is going to make cleaning the carpet difficult. You really can’t do much with a broom to get out ground in dirt.

The carpeting is pretty clean right now and seems to be holding up well. I have a mat outside the front door and one on the inside, too, to help catch dirt from our shoes. Eventually, though, I’m going to have to be looking at steam cleaners and vacuum cleaners so I can really get the carpets clean and prevent any undue odors from setting up in them. I also want to remove any allergens that might become trapped in the carpets and cause us problems in here.

The rest of the floors are linoleum tile. Those need to be addressed, as well. They have a lot of wear on them and the dirt and stains are pretty well ground in. I’m going to have to get something that will really scrub the surface of the tiles and get that stuff out. Then, I’ll need to seal the floor so it’s easier to clean and less likely to get in this shape again.

The house we’ve moved into is coming together in a way that’s very personal. It’s nothing like what you might see in a home and garden magazine, but our signature is everywhere. That’s how a home should be, I think.

I’m planning to work on the windows in the front door. It’s a 15 light window, which is great. All the doors to the outside are just like it. However, for the front door, I’d prefer a way to make things a little more private so that people who come to the door can’t just peer inside. So, I’ll be using glass paint to personalize the windows and give me a touch of privacy without blocking out the light or putting up curtains.

The curtains I’m using in my bedroom are actually too short for the floor-to-ceiling windows, so I hung them lower. At the top, I’ll create a painted glass area to look like a stained glass transom. I’ll use the pattern of one of the quilt blocks on my bed for the “transom”. I’ll add a window topper and mini-blinds to match the curtains to the door.

I am one of those people who neither wears a watch nor uses a conventional alarm clock. I depend on my cell phone to provide me with the time of day and I use its alarm to awaken me when I need to get up and get ready for work.

Earlier this evening, though, I was talking to youngest son as he was browsing through an online catalog, finding all kinds of unusual items. Some of these items were time pieces with various functions. Some had the whole solar system on the face, and it rotated to mimic the positions of the stars at any given time of the day. Others were luxury watches like the Chanel J12. Seeing as how I don’t currently even own a watch, I wondered aloud if it might be a good idea to get one since I really am wanting to step up further in my job. I’d like to know that I will be on time not only for regular work schedules, but also for meetings and classes I’ll have to take as I move ahead toward a promotion.

Did you all have a nice Memorial Day? I hope you remembered the reason for the holiday is not just another excuse for a cookout. It’s to remember in our thoughts and prayers those who have sacrificed their lives for the freedom of this nation, and those families who have given their fathers, sons, mothers, brothers, sisters, and daughters for this high calling.

Flags are flown at half staff on this day in honor of the memory of those whose lives were laid down for freedom. While we all loathe war and the devastation it brings on all countries, there comes a time when free men and women are called upon to step forward and take up arms in defense of their homeland. When you think of the soldiers currently serving on foreign soil, send up a prayer for their safe return. While you’re at it, send up a prayer for the citizens of whatever country they’re in, that they will be able to defend themselves from those who would overpower them and remove their freedoms and human rights.

The outside of the house we’re living in now is all wood. It has aged beautifully into a silver color, but is showing signs of weather damage in some places. I think it would be a good time to seal it so no further damage occurs. If possible, it would be nice to have vinyl siding put on, if it could be found designed to look like this aged wood looks. We’d still have the silvery color and the wood texture without any of the upkeep that has to be done to genuine wood siding.

Of course, the house doesn’t belong to me to it would be entirely up to Older Daughter and her husband, but it’s certainly a thought so the house will last for many more years to come. If the opportunity arises that I can buy this house, I think seeing to the exterior will be first on my list of things to do here.
